Rivers Blackwater and Pant

Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) is a non-native invasive species and was known to be present on the River Blackwater near Braintree in 2012. Surveys that year found that the plant had spread upstream and downstream from its known location and a proposal was put in place to tackle the problem.

Funding from the Environment Agency allowed work to commence in 2013 and the plant has been treated with herbicide and manually removed where appropriate. Further surveys were undertaken, and treatment and monitoring continued in 2014 and 2015 with the aim of eradicating the plant from this stretch of river.
