On Saturday the 24th of January, societies from the University of Essex worked hard collecting 15 bags of rubbish from a highly littered area of the Colne near the University Campus. A group of 17 strong volunteers, organised by Torborg Rustand (President of the Environmental Protection Society), could be found picking up a range of rubbish including clothing, wood and plastics from the river bank.
Societies involved included the Environmental Protection Society, Cypriot Society and Biological Sciences Society. In the hope to remove more litter and keep on top of this growing problem, these societies are hoping to perform monthly litter picks. We will be posting the dates of these litter picks on the news section, but if you would like to be updated by email then please contactemilyg@essexwt.org.uk
This event was inspired by two river wardens from the area, Rachel and Charlotte Langley, who have been regularly surveying the river for us and noticed the litter to be a big problem.
