Research has shown that spending time in nature can help reduce the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Time spent near water, including rivers, has been shown to increase wellbeing even more so than time spent at outside green spaces in a recent study by The Canal & River Trust. The wellbeing benefits of angling in particular are clear to participants in research at the University of Essex.
Casting Away Trauma is an Essex-based angling programme taking place in spring/summer 2024-26 for those who have experienced, or are struggling with, trauma. Currently, the programme is recruiting military veterans and emergency services personnel. This study aims to help inform NHS policy about the recommendation of spending time and doing activities outside supporting mental health. The project will assemble a team of emergency service workers and veterans who will have the chance to go on a weekend-long fishing event, with meals, overnight accommodation, and angling equipment provided.
Read more about the project here or attend their information evening at the University of Essex this Tuesday 16th April 6.30pm-8pm.
