For the past few years the Essex Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the Environment Agency (EA) have been collaborating on a range of joint initiatives.
Initially, the work began with EWT becoming involved with the EA’s Water Framework Directive, which shared many goals with the EWT’s Living Landscapes and Living Seas initiatives. These joint aspirations led to greater collaboration and has seen the partnership working from early projects involving mapping Himalayan Balsam to the large-scale Catchment Restoration Project.
The Catchment Restoration Project has led to projects under the Catchment Partnership Action Fund (CPAF) on the Rivers Chelmer and Ingrebourne and the Mardyke Valley. This Partnership now supports dedicated project staff and 140+ volunteers undertaking survey work as River Wardens.
